Exhibition “Romania Powered by Nature”

Between 27 May and 20 June 2016, Dalles Hall in Bucharest hosted the exhibition “Romania Powered by Nature”, an event dedicated to nature and to initiatives impacting the environment. During this event, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests presented the results of the three programmes funded by Norway Grants (RO02 – Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, RO04 – Reduction of Hazardous Substances and RO07 – Adaptation to Climate Change). The project RO02-0013-SIENPHCTS – Integrated Study on the Contribution of Ecosystems in the protected Natura 2000 areas: Pricop-Huta-Certeze and the Upper Tisa to the Sustainable Development of Local Communities was among them.

Internship (Student Exchange Programme), 10-19.04.2016

Between 10 and 19 April 2016, the internship Adaptation to Climate Change in Norway took place as a prize awarded to the five winning teams of the contest Green Path in Models, developed under the aegis of the Environmental Protection Agency Sibiu within the project Green Path towards Sustainable Development. One of the five winning teams was the one comprised of Andrei NIȚOAIA and Ionuț-Răzvan PONCIȘ, two graduates of the Faculty of Geography, specialized in Hydrology and Meteorology, members of the RO02-0013 – SIENPHCTS project implementation team. During the internship, the students went to Norway, accompanied by Mrs Rodica Ciudin and Mr Isarie Claudiu, professors at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, as well as by the project promoters (Environmental Protection Agency Sibiu).

Each winning team was requested to present its project/model proposal on adapting to climate change. The presentation was attended by professors, officials and experts in the field. In addition, the students attended courses and seminars on various issues related to sustainable development, held at the University of Sogndal (https://www.hisf.no/en)

International Conference on “Air and Water – Components of the Environment”, Cluj-Napoca, 25.03.2016

On Friday 25 March 2016, the Faculty of Geography, Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca hosted the International Conference on Air and Water – Components of the Environment, an event dedicated to the World Meteorological Day and the World Water Day. This scientific event was attended by seven members of the RO02-0013 SIENPHCTS project implementation team, who participated with three scientific materials resulting from the partial analyses of the project. The three presentations are published in the conference volume at Casa Cărţii de Ştiinţă Publishing House.

Regional Workshop on the Assessment of the Ecosystems Services Provided by ROSCI0002 Apuseni, Cluj-Napoca, 17.03.2016

On 17 March 2016, a regional workshop was held in Cluj-Napoca, organized by the National Centre for Sustainable Development, an event that is part of the information activities carried out under the project The assessment of the ecosystem services provided by protected areas in Romania – ValueEcoServ. The event was attended by the SIENPHCTS project implementation team, Mr Ciprian Corpade – expert on protected areas and Răzvan Bătinaş – project manager. The event agenda included an overview of the project, followed by a discussion focused on ROSCI0002-Apuseni. An emphasis was placed on presenting some theoretical aspects regarding the ecosystem services and the benefits to the local community. In addition, the participants received forms for the identification of ecosystem services in the above-mentioned site, under the form of an assessment/evaluation questionnaire. Among the participants were the representatives of various specialized institutions, including partners in similar national projects financed under the RO-02 programme, representatives of the local branches of Cluj County and Alba County Environmental Protection Agencies, of Someş-Tisa Water Basin Administration, NGOs and representatives of higher education institutions, such as Babeş-Bolyai University and Institute of Speleology. The discussions were led by Mr Radu Vădineanu – project manager, followed by a series of colleagues working in the project implementation team.

Meeting – Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, 24.02.2016

On 24 February 2016, a meeting dedicated to programmes RO-02, RO-04 and RO-07 took place in Bucharest, at the initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, organized by the programme operator, which aimed at assessing the degree of project implementation carried out by promoters and solving the problems emerged in achieving the objectives proposed. Lecturer Răzvan Bătinaş, PhD, the manager of SIENPHCTS project, participated as guest on behalf of the project implementation team. The event took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, starting at 2 p.m. Among the participants were project managers and partners of projects related to the programme RO-02 – Biodiversity and ecosystem services. The discussions were led by Mrs Marisanda Pîrîianu, coordinator of the EEA Financial Mechanism in Romania, who consulted each participant on the stage of the projects under implementation. The topics discussed were related to the degree of absorption of the funds allocated, the level of achievement of the assumed targets, problems and divergences emerged in each project. In addition, the discussion reached other topics such as the premises for running future programmes and areas to be funded by the future calls for proposals.

Roundtable – National Environmental Guard, 15.02.2016

On 15 February 2016, a roundtable was held in Bucharest, under the patronage of the National Environmental Guard, which aimed at presenting and analysing the methodologies for the establishment of ecological corridors and at distributing the brochure “Protected areas in Romania”, elaborated within the project Development of the methodology for establishing ecological corridors and training the administrators of the protected areas for their better management, financed under the RO02 – Biodiversity and ecosystem services, supported by the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA) 2009-2014. Lecturer Răzvan Bătinaş, PhD, the manager of SIENPHCTS project, participated as guest on behalf of the project implementation team. The event took place at the restaurant “Il Re del Mare”, starting at 10 a.m. Among the participants were the representatives of various specialized institutions, namely the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, the National Environmental Guard, and partners in similar national projects financed under the RO-02 programme. The discussions were led by Mrs. Cornelia Ghiţă – project manager, followed by representatives from the following institutions: Computas AS, UNESCO Pro Natura Ecological Club and Mrs Alina Frim. The topics discussed were related to the presentation of the software application and the platform for the management and monitoring of protected areas, of ecological corridors, respectively, and the presentation of the methodologies for establishing ecological corridors for large mammals, migratory birds and migratory fish.

Protected Areas Gala, 16-18.12.2015

Between 16 and 18 December 2015, Robert Stanciu and Rareș Petric, members of the SIENPHCTS project as hydrologic technicians, attended the Protected Areas Gala in Romania, organized in Braşov. The event started with a plenary session including the opening of the conference, the presentation of the EME Natura 2000 project results and a debate on the communication about nature and protected areas. They were followed by several workshops, Robert and Rareş taking part in the workshop on Natura 2000 sites and sustainable development, in which participants identified the main problems related to Natura 2000 sites. At the end of the first day, there was a photography presentation held by the photographer Dan Dinu, who managed to capture breathtaking shots of the Wild Romania.

The second day was dedicated to some thematic tours, conducted in the protected areas located in the proximity of Braşov, our colleagues participating in the field trip to Piatra Craiului National Park. The first stop was at the Visitor Centre of the Piatra Craiului National Park, where participants viewed a documentary film about this area, followed by a the field trip to the Zărneşti Abysses and up to Curmătura Chalet. In the evening, a number of administrators of protected areas were awarded for their activity. The last day was focused on debates in the five workshops, when several solutions on the issues raised throughout this event were identified.

Kick-off Conference! 25 November 2015

The Faculty of Geography under Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, in partnership with Heidenroslein Association, Baia Mare, Romania and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, Trondheim, Norway, organizes the kick-off conference of the project RO02-0013 – Integrated Study on the Contribution of Ecosystems in the protected Natura 2000 areas: Pricop-Huta-Certeze and the Upper Tisa to the Sustainable Development of Local Communities (SIENPHCTS).

The event will take place on Wednesday 25 November 2015 at 10.00 a.m., in Ambasador Hall, Grand Hotel Napoca, 1 Octavian Goga Street, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The project is funded by the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism 2009-2014, Programme RO02 – Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, Call for Proposals No. 1, whose Programme Operator is the Romanian Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests.
